The Students’ Union is run by students for students – that means we’re completely dedicated to representing students at Staffs and helping provide what they want from their student experience. That covers everything from advice and support, great venues and events to representation, sports clubs, activities and even a dedicated student media service.
We’re constantly striving to ensure the best possible experience for all students at Staffs and free membership of the Students’ Union is automatic on enrolling at Staffordshire University. That means our students get to have their say in what we do and how we do it.
Staffordshire University Students’ Union is a democratic organisation, working entirely for the benefit of students.
The Students' Union sponsors and supports a diverse range of student-run groups. These include both competitive and recreational sports groups, special interest groups, academic societies and some that we are unable to categorise! As part of the Students' Union being a democratic organisation, all clubs & societies must have a democratically elected committee, unless they are in their first year of existence (in which case they are run by the persons coming forward to start the society, and must elect a committee during the department elections period).
Committee elections are run by the Activities staff team - please contact Tommy Hill if you have any questions about the process on t.hill@staffs.ac.uk.
The list of positions that are to be elected are decided by the outgoing committee.
Have a think as to what worked for this year, and what positions didn't work, and come up with the list of positions that should exist for the 2012-13 committee.
There needs to be at least three positions - traditionally Chair, Treasurer and Secretary. Have a look at these typical positions to see if they're helpful for you.
Once you've got your list of positions, send Tommy an e-mail by Sunday 4 March 2012 at the latest with the information in - t.hill@staffs.ac.uk.
By default, your election will be held online. If you would prefer an election in person, please include that information (with the reason why) in the e-mail.
If you fail to do this, the group will not exist after summer!
Speak to current committee members and get as much information as possible.
Check out the role descriptions - you can do this by talking to the current committee and checking out some basic role descriptions. As some groups have specialist roles we have not included a description of all roles available in all groups - however information on specialist roles is available from current committee.
Make sure you have the dates in your diary - write down the important dates from the Elections Timetable below, and please make a note that if you are successful you will most need to attend Training and a Sponsorship & Development meeting with the department. Please see the dates below for more information.
Think about how you're going to encourage your fellow group members to vote for you - don't assume that even if you're the only person running for a position that someone won't ask you an awkward question at some point about why you're best for the role, so try and have an answer ready!
Get two members of the group to 'second' your nomination. This will involve them giving you their full names & student numbers so you can input them as part of submitting your nomination.
Finally, don't forget to put yourself forward! You can do this through your group's webpage (the full list of groups is here).
Voting will be held online through your group's webpage (you can find the full list of them online here).
We use the Single Transferable Vote (STV) - which means your rank the candidates from 1 through to however many there are.
Make sure you cast your vote over the Easter break before voting closes. Once the results have been counted in the few days after the Easter break, we'll e-mail out the full breakdown, and congratulate the winners.
