Tax and National Insurance Jargon

Students in the UK are liable to pay income tax and National Insurance contributions on their earnings, just like everyone else.

There is Student Tax Advice site and a tax refund calculator that have been created to help answer some of your most frequently asked questions about tax, and to help you find out if you might be eligible for a tax refund. These has been developemed by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has worked alongside the National Union of Students (NUS).

Tax advice for Students

If your income has varied over the year, you may be due a tax refund on tax you've paid because you didn't use your Personal Allowance.

If you're a student and you're working, you can be taxed on casual, part-time and temporary work. Almost everyone who works legally in the UK is entitled to receive the National Minimum Wage.
