Should I join the Race?

Why Run?

There are many different motivations for becoming an officer of your Students’ Union.

  • You want to represent the views of 17,000 students.
  • You want to influence your University.
  • You want to improve your Union.
  • You've enjoyed your time at University and want to make sure others do the same.
  • You want to influence the way the local community perceives students.
  • You want to challenge yourself with new experiences.
  • You want to work on skills for your future.
  • You want a job that is challenging, exciting and fun!

As you can see there are lots of great reasons for running for an officer position and with 21 positions available in the 2012/13 election, there are plenty of opportunities.

Becca McLellan, Commercial Services Officer (2008-2010):
"I saw that becoming an officer was a natural development from the roles I already had in the Union. I understood the workings of the Union and thought I could use this to enhance the student experience at Staffs."

Vanessa Brumby, Education and Welfare Officer (2008-2010):
"You gain experience of being a trustee and having responsibility for an organisation and staff members. All the skills I learnt as an officer have really developed my personal skills and have helped me as a graduate in the workplace."

How to Run

If all this sounds like a challenge you would like to take on, then the next steps are nice and simple. Firstly you need to make a decision on whether you want to go for a full-time or part-time position. Secondly you must decide what role you would like to take on. If you’re not sure take a look at the positions available page and see which positions interests you most or what position relates to activities or jobs you’ve done whilst at university.

Finally you need to get yourself nominated to run. All you need to do is get 12 current students to support you and you’re in! Check out the elections guidebook for further information.

NB: Any student who is elected into a trustee position must satisfy the legal requirements of being a trustee. If you are interested in becoming a trustee, you cannot have been convicted of an offence involving dishonesty or deception, be under 18 or be undischarged bankrupt.
