Undergraduate Research Conference (27/03/2012, 09:00)

The inaugural conference will take place on 27^th and 28^th March 2012. The conference is designed to bring together students from across all faculties and all levels to share their experience of learning through research. Students are invited to submit research posters that may be based upon dissertation/final year project work, or the posters may reflect research or other undergraduate enquiry-based learning. A staff session exploring new developments in research informed teaching will run in parallel with the undergraduate sessions.

The call for abstracts will open on 28^th January. Abstracts to be limited to 500 words and are to be submitted to the Directors of Teaching and Learning within each faculty. Each faculty will then select the best five abstracts for presentation as posters at the conference.

All submitted abstracts will be considered for publication in the Journal “Innovative Practice in Higher Education”. All accepted posters will be published in the same volume. The accepted posters will be collated by the conference organising team and organised into two or three themes. The best posters in each theme (as judged by a panel during the conference) will be awarded an expenses-paid trip to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, USA, in March 2013.

The conference provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to demonstrate their research to a wider audience and get their research published. The prizes are an added bonus!

Student Activities Awards Night 2012

Once again it is the time of year to celebrate the achievements you have made in the past year both individually and as part of your Club or Society. We recognise that the things you do for Student Activities are a huge part of your time here at Staffordshire University and want to recognise this, and you, with the night you deserve!

This year, as well as a champagne reception, three course meal and of course the awards, we are including free venue entry for either Super Friday or Mukky Duck in your ticket price which has once again been frozen despite this year being even bigger than before!

Last year tickets sold out in record time so get yours early to avoid disappointment, especially if you know you or your group are being put forward for an award! Nomination forms can be found here

STAFFORD STUDENTS! Please not that the return transport will leave Jubillee Hall immediately after the close of the evening. You are more than welcome to choose the option for a Super Friday ticket, however, if you do you will be required to organise your own transport back to Stafford.

Staffordshire University’s annual Diversity Fashion Show is set to be bigger and better than ever before!

The student-led event will take place at 8.00pm (doors open 7.30pm) on the night of Tuesday 20 March 2012 in the Students’ Union’s LRV (Leek Road, Stoke), and will showcase a diverse mix of styles, cultures and traditional dress, alongside professional dance displays.

From original creations by students and traditional dress from around the globe to design creations from local designers, the Diversity Fashion Show celebrates individual style and culture and represents the diverse mix of students at Staffordshire University.

Please note that the LRV is usually an over 18’s only venue, however under 18’s are allowed to come to this event providing they wear a wrist band (given on the door) to specify that they are under 18 and will not be consuming alcohol in the venue. When you purchase your ticket we will ask you to specify if you are under or over 18.

Seating for the event is on a first-come, first-served basis, so please arrive early if you want to secure a seat.

Staffordshire University Women’s Just Play Centre

A new Women’s football session has recently been launched at Staffordshire University which is open to all students and other interested players.

The session, themed within the Football Associations new Just Play! brand, is open to any female players aged 16+ who are interested in playing fun, social football each week. The session aims to encourage new players to come along and play the game along with supporting new players or players who have played the game before and are now looking to get back into football. The session can also be used as a great alternative to the usual fitness routine and a way of developing new skills.

Details of the session are:

Venue: Staffordshire University, Leek Road Campus, ST4 2DF
When: Every Thursday
Time: 4pm-5pm on the main Astroturf pitch
Cost: FREE

Do you have opinions to share about the experiences of mature students at university? You might be a mature student studying for a degree for the first time or a staff member or student rep who supports mature students.

Million+ and the National Union of Students are holding a series of workshops around the UK to explore the experiences of mature students in higher education and the people who support mature students. Using facilitated discussion in a secure environment, you will be able to share your different perspectives and generate ideas for local and national improvements.

Staffordshire University has kindly agreed to host one of these workshops and we are looking for willing recruits to come and share perspectives. Drinks and cakes will be provided.

Open to: mature undergraduate students, academic and support staff working with mature students, students' union officers and staff and student reps.

To register for the workshop, please email katymorris@millionplus.ac.uk with your name, your role (student/staff/ rep etc) and details of any access needs that we should take into account. Places are limited and will be allocated with a view to ensuring a good balance of perspectives.

Workshop outcomes will be minuted and form part of a report to be jointly published and launched in Parliament by Million+ and NUS in May 2012. Photographs may be taken and delegates may be quoted, but will not be identified by name without permission.

Interested in gaining some valuable training and experience in environmental auditing? We are offering FREE auditor training

You’ll receive a full mornings training in the requirements of environmental auditing followed by a free lunch, and then first hand environmental auditing experience in the afternoon. No skills are required as we provide full training on the day; all we ask is that you can attend the morning training session and complete at least 1 audit at the university during the afternoon. Each audit will be completed in pairs and will take between 1-2 hours depending on the size of the department. Each auditor will receive a certificate at the end of the day to boost your CV.

10.00 – 13.00 Auditor training
13.00 – 14.00 Lunch
14.00 -16.30 Practical auditing experience

Where: BG50, Brindley, Stoke Campus (Training), then audits at Stoke and Stafford Campuses
