COP21 - what's the deal?

COP21 stands for "The Conference of Parties", essentially a fancy way of saying world leaders will all be in the same room deciding our future in Paris, December 2015. The COP meet to discuss the 198 member countries commitments to reducing greenhouse gases. They meet every year, but COP21 is special. This time, they will agree a new global deal on climate change.

COP21 & me - what's the link?

It's our job to ensure our message is loud and clear - this is our chance to tell world leaders we care about the planet we live on, and it's time to match the politics with everyday action. People all over the world are already doing their bit, it's time for governments to catch up. They need to drive positive environmental change from the top, and pledge to take real action on climate change.

COP21 - what are we asking?

The crucial things they need to commit to are:-

  • Keep 80% of fossil fuel in the ground
  • Transition to 100& clean energy by 2050

This will ensure global temperature rise will be below 2 degrees warming. Anything above this could be catastrophic, irreversibly changing the world we know now.

COP21 - what can I do?

We are asking our students to add their voice. This takes 2 mins and can be done here.

We also had a HUGE banner on campus for students to sign and personalise that we then presented to our local MP Tristram Hunt so he is able to take our views forward to this global event.

Be part of this amazing representation of the student voice,

showing that students do care, and will lead the change for global justice.
