Recently, we have had an increase in the amount of students asking about what we do as a union to ensure the safety of our students. We take the safety of our students very seriously, so your Vice President Lou Mason has put together a little blog for you all.

Firstly, Be Safe is a campaign that we run to raise awareness of things you can do to keep yourself safe. It has a dedicated section of our website (http://www.staffsunion.com/besafe) with loads of advice.

If you have been involved in an incident, whether you see it as serious or not, make sure you report it to the police. The more incidents that are reported to the police, the more data they will have to pull from and help keep the community safe. If you don’t feel comfortable with reporting it to the police, email us at yourofficers@staffs.ac.uk and we can send the info on for you.

Union Angels is something we introduced last year to help our students get home safe. The union angels are the purple people with high vis on nights out and keep you company when you walk home. It is going well and we would like to thank LRV for their support with the project.

We also have an on-campus Police Officer – PC Simon Stone - whom we work very closely with. At our Annual General Meeting the other day, PC Stone came along to reassure students of a police presence outside of the University campus. We were told that there are plain clothes police officers, PCSO’s and Police Officers who patrol Shelton on a daily basis. PC Stone also has access to personal safety alarms and other bits of kit that you can pick up free of charge. Pop into the Cop Shop and see him if you have any concerns.

Finally, please remember that the Students’ Union is here for you. If you have any problems or concerns, we are here to listen and advise. Please feel free to drop in at any time and come see us – it’s what we’re here for.
