Varsity 2010: Women's Rugby League

Varsity 2010 Women's Rugby League Staffs tried to come back in the second half but ran out of time.

By Paddy Day

Keele 26–20 Staffs

The Staffordshire Women’s Rugby League team narrowly lost 26–20 in an enthralling contest at Keele University.

Sarah Stock piled over from a few yards out to give Staffs an early lead, but Keele responded moments later, as the Staffs defence could only hold out until the fifth tackle after relentless pressure from the hosts.

Keele then moved ahead, as playmaker Sarah Ward ran from her own half to go in under the posts.

However, Staffs responded as Lindsey Tate wasn’t going to be stopped from a few yards out. It was good work from Staffs as they piled on the pressure with back-to-back sets of six.

But Keele finished off the half better after Pip Robertson showed her pace on the left wing to crash over from 20 yards.

Ward made it a hat-trick of tries at the start of the second half after poor missed tackles from Staffs, who looked dead and buried.

But suddenly they moved their performance up a few gears. Polly Horton bulldozed her way over the line from ten yards out, before the inspirational Sarah Lang showed her quality.

Lang managed to duck and dive Keele tackles to force her way through from close range, and Staffs were doing all they could to get that extra try to put them ahead, but Ward ultimately secured victory for Keele.
