Review: 'Shutter Island'

By Ben McCarthy

The fourth collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio turns out to be their most engrossing.

Shutter Island takes place in 1957 as US Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) is assigned to find missing prisoner in an aslyum on a remote island. But things are not as they seam as Daniels believes that something bigger is afoot.

This film truly showcases Scorsese and DiCaprio’s talent, Scorsese bringing his usual energy to the film and a Hitchcockian approach with great use of music and creating an air of mystery that surrounds the hospital.

As DiCaprio gives one of his best performances to date, Teddy Daniels is one of his most complex characters has he is trying to find the missing patient and battling his own daemons at the same time.

Although the climax doesn’t do justice to the rest of the film, this is still one of the most engrossing and intriguing films to come out this year.
