Your Seas Your Voice logo Your Seas Your Voice is run by the Marine Conservation Society

By Ben Malkin

Do you know that the coast of the British Isles is a colourful, fascinating world?

Teeming with a variety of life, our coast is home to some fascinating creatures, from seals and leatherback turtles, to the giant basking shark.

Do you also know that less than 1% of our coast is protected from industrial action?

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) has been campaiging for laws to be passed that will make it possible to fully protect some parts of our seas.

Through their hard work and dedication, three Marine Reserves have already been set up, but this still only amounts to around 5 square kilometers of protected sea.

Now you can really make a difference.

At www.yourseasyourvoice.com you can register your vote to nominate a site you feel deserves this protection, or choose from one of the 73 sites that the MCS believe warrant protection.

As the UK charity for the protection of our seas, the MCS is uniquely placed to ensure that your voice is heard.

They can show how people care deeply for our coast, our shores and our wildlife. Every vote on the site is a vote for safe and productive future for our seas.

The idea of protecting seabeds from fishing, dredging and construction is not new.

Trials around the world have shown that giving the seabed a breather can have some amazing results. On average the variety of life in a marine reserve increases by 21%, and volume of life by a whopping 466%.

The success of the MCS campaigns for UK and Scottish marine bills now means a network of marine reserves is a real possibility. There has never been a better time to safeguard our seas.
