What is Shotokan? Shotokan is the world’s largest style of karate with almost 10 million practitioners worldwide. Shotokan was founded by the father of modern-day karate Gichin Funakoshi. Shotokan is typified by its emphasis on technique, speed, and the development of strong spirit.

The University club has been in existence in various guises since 1977. The club is an active member of the KUGB regularly winning numerous medals at major championships and regularly attending national training courses. The club has a growing membership of approximately 60 people, both male and female, aged from 6 years upwards.

Club Instructor Steve Johnston is a 4th dan black belt with over 20 years experience. A former student, he is married and has one daughter Emily - who also does karate. He can be contacted directly by telephone on 01782 410072 (evenings), or via e-mail steven.johnston903@ntlworld.com. All KUGB instructors are checked through the Criminal Records Bureau and regularly assessed by senior KUGB officers to ensure standards are maintained.
