The Students’ Union is run by students for students – that means we’re completely dedicated to representing students at Staffs and helping provide what they want from their student experience. That covers everything from advice and support, great venues and events to representation, sports clubs, activities and even a dedicated student media service.
We’re constantly striving to ensure the best possible experience for all students at Staffs and free membership of the Students’ Union is automatic on enrolling at Staffordshire University. That means our students get to have their say in what we do and how we do it.
Staffordshire University Students’ Union is a democratic organisation, working entirely for the benefit of students.
The Students' Union sponsors and supports a diverse range of student-run groups. These include both competitive and recreational sports groups, special interest groups, academic societies and some that we are unable to categorise! The Extreme Gardening Society is a brand new society for 2011, to be co-owned by students, staff, alumni, or even members of the community. It takes place at the Community Organic Garden at the Stoke allotments. This is situated in between the Crime Scene House and Repertory Theatre on the Leek Road, just yards from the Leek Road campus at Staffordshire University. There is car parking available. The Garden is a 6 allotment site. The idea is that we grow pesticide/chemical free, totally ORGANIC fruit, vegetables and flowers and divide the produce up between ourselves, taking whatever we believe we deserve! Put in a few hours a week and that's your food shopping for the week. It's almost like a miniature smallholding. Our facilities include a 50 foot Polytunnel, four greenhouses, a large number of raised beds and a first class shed “complex” heated with a wood burning stove and complete with an eco-toilet. Well, you need an ample amount of tea breaks, as normally soundtracked by Planet Rock. Equipment is provided, clothing is not. The scheme is approved by Involved Staffs, so if you're a Staffordshire University student you can claim back any/ALL expenses as long as you're signed up. You can find out more about it here; http://www.staffsunion.com/activities/volunteering http://facebook.com/involved.staffs Whatsmore, if you log hours from gardening through Involved, you can get yourself a certificate. Looks rather at home on a CV. You don't need to know anything. I've been a member of the Garden for an entire year and hadn't dabbled much with all-things-green previously, you're taught everything you need to know as time goes on. The sessions are now running on winter time and are as follows; Wednesday 1pm - 5pm Sunday 10am - 5pm As well as these times I'm going to be planning socials, events and trips. It isn't going to be solely gardening, it's from-seed-to-table, so there is an emphasis on cooking as well. Check the Facebook for details and photos. http://www.facebook.com/groups/staffs.gardening/ So why not pop down and say hello! For more info, as if you need any after this essay, contact myself or Dave (who knows much more what he's talking about - but don't let that influence your decision); - Me/Anne - dance_commado@hotmail.com - Dave - dave.allman@staffs.ac.uk We're both lovely.
