Welcome to Staffordshire University Students' Union

Union Council

What is the Students' Union Council?

The Students’ Union Council meeting takes place to allow the Officer team to represent you, our members. The representation of you and your issues would be improved if more people became involved. However many students are unaware of when and why the Students’ Union Council meetings take place and how to get their voice heard. The objective of this page is to break Students' Union Council down and provide the information that our members can use to make the most of this important decision making body.

The strength of the Students Union is that it is run by students, for students. In order for this to be truly effective students need to have a say in how things are run. The Students Union Council agenda is open and available to you, its members.

You are welcome to attend the next meeting which will take place on the 30th September at 5pm in the Octagon Boardroom, Stafford campus. The final agenda is available here.

What does Students' Union Council do?

The Students' Union Council is one of the most important aspects of the Students Union. The Students' Union Council meets once a month during term time and discusses any issues that affect the students here at Staffs Uni. It exists to discuss policy, create direction and primarily to represent the Unions 16,000 members ensuring that your issues and concerns are being addressed.

The Council is made up of elected representatives from many aspects of our diverse student body. There are officer positions for most groups of students and for areas of interest such as Local Students Officer, Accommodation Officer and each faculty also has programme representative. See the Officers page for details of officers, or for a full list of Officer positions see the notice boards by the Students' Union receptions in both Stoke and Stafford.

So what do they do?

The Students' Union Council exists to:

  • To make decisions that can decide the direction, stance and views of the Students’ Union.
  • Scrutinise the work of the Executive Officers and hold them accountable.
  • To consider reports submitted by the Full time Officers and standing committees
  • To elect members to standing committees and Union Council (co-option)
  • To consider the budgets of the Students’ Union.

If you are not a Union Officer, don’t worry you can still attend Union Council - every student at the University is able to attend Union Council and they will have speaking rights. Only elected Officers (or co-opted members) have voting rights. For more information on how Union Council operates or for more information on becoming a part time officer) speak to a member of the Officer team.
