Referenda

What are Referenda?

A referendum is your way of having a direct input into the decisions made by the Students' Union, by casting your vote on a big decision.

A referendum could be either a question to answer, or a policy or position for the Union to adopt.

It can be submitted either through the Students' Union Council, or by a student member (with the support of 50 other students). The question is put to the entire membership to answer, and could completely change the way the the Union runs.

How do I get an issue discussed?

a) The simplest way to get an issue discussed is to raise it with one of the Sabbatical Officers or attend a Union Forum, Students' Council Meeting.

b) If you feel the issue requires demonstrable support in order for it to be discussed then you can request a "Secure Petition".
The Union will help create an online signup page on the website that can then be promoted to allow students to indicate their support for the motion to be discussed.  An issue requires the support of 50 current students for Council to be required to consider it, and the support of 250 current students for it to be put to the membership as a referendum.
