Countdown to Stoke’s Welcome Week

Countdown to Stafford’s Welcome Week

Welcome Week Top Tips

Here are some tips to help you in your first week of Uni. Whether you are in halls in student housing, these tips can help you break the ice with new people and help you feel more comfortable in your new surroundings. Do not forget everyone around you will be in the same boat, so do not worry. Relax and enjoy yourself.

1. Before you arrive: Be Happy with your appearance, wear clothes you feel good in and make sure you’re happy with your hair. If you do not worry about your appearance, you will be able to have more fun as you will be relaxed.

2. Prop your door open while you unpack so you can see who is about and so people can see you.

3. Make your bed first so you have somewhere to sit, relax, and talk to new people.

4. Put your posters up; makes your room feel more like home it also allows people to find something out about you. (If you don’t have any posters, look out for the poster sale.)

5. Bring some sweets, a cake or a beer to offer to people. It is a great way to break the ice.

6. Put some of your favourite music on (not too loud). You might find your new housemates like the same music as you.

7. Ask questions. Don’t worry about asking the same questions. What’s your name? What course you on? Where are you from? Everyone is doing it.

8. Accept that you will probably be homesick - do not go home in the first week. It does get better and you will not be the only one feeling it.

9. When you arrive: Join a club or two - whatever your interest, be it rugby or trading cards, there will be something for you and it is much easier to talk to people when you have common interests.

10. Check the website/Facebook/Welcome Week publications to find out what is going on on-campus in your first week.

11. Make sure you pick up your Welcome Bag, it will have loads of freebies and goodies in.

12. Take advantage of the campus/supermarket/local area tours to familiarise yourself with your new surroundings
