For years trans people have been misunderstood, victomised and killed, politically we have been forgotten and tangled in red tape, medically we have been denied and had treatment removed just because we are different in many peoples social construct.
At NUS national conference 2015 after many years of campaigning transphobia and frustration, the delegates decided that it was time to listen to trans students and agree that there is a need for an independent liberation group led by a trans officer, this will be enacted this summer with the new group becoming reality.
At Staffs we believe in being at the forefront of choice, our students’ union was the first to have a trans officer, trans president, trans member of the nus nec and the first for a trans student to lead and work with the university to write policy for the university, so we need to be at the front when looking at trans again and be one of the first to bring in the trans liberation network lead by a trans person independent and financed by the students union the same way as the present four networks.
With the difference between gender and sexuality there is a need to have an network to discuss and change perceptions of what trans is and how it affects society, the aims of the network will be change and education, educating and learning about itself to affect change at university and socially in the community.
The trans network will work closely with the LGB network as there are many crossovers and similarities but at the same time many variances that only trans can understand.
We are asking this forum to allow the creation of the Trans liberation network to be funded and supported by Staffordshire University Students’ Union.
