What is Disability History Month?
The aim of UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) is to promote the rights of people who have disabilities and their struggle for equality now as well as in the past. The event has run every year since the first annual event held in 2010.
This year UKDHM will take place between 16 November, to 16 December 2022. This covers:
- HIV/AIDS Day (1st December),
- International Day of People with Disabilities (3rd December),
- International Human Rights Day (10th December).

Where did Disability History Month originate?
In 2009 the Department for Children, Schools and Families commissioned the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to carry out research on the possibility of a 'Disability History Week' in schools. This research showed that schools would be in favour of such a week.
Disability History Month is now supported by a wide range of disability groups, unions and voluntary groups, including our very own Disabled Students' Network and Students' Union.

What is this years theme?
Each year has had its own theme, and this year we're asking "How far have we come? And how far have got to go?" The month will also have a focus on access.
Accordingly, throughout this month your Disabled Students' Network will be:
- Lobbying the university to improve access on our campuses.
- Working with university executives and Officer team to share "day in the life of a wheelchair user" experiences.
- Hosting social events.
- And so much more!

If you see us in person, please sign a postcard!
Alternatively, the QR code and link will take you to our Access report form, where you can record any access issues you spot around campus.
We will then send these to the Vice Chancellor to raise awareness of these issues and hopefully bring about change!
