The History of Britsh Sign Langauge

As part of disability history month, we would like to share with you the importance of sign language and the history of which it developed into what it is today. Over 150'000 people in the UK can sign, this includes people who are hard of hearing, or family and friends of those who are. British Sign Language (BSL) dates back to the deaf people in Britain that were signing as early as in the 16th century although most scholars believe that they were signing earlier. On 18 March 2003 the UK government formally recognised that BSL is a language in its own right.

Would you like to learn BSL? Check out the videos below for an intorduction. The videos were filmed with a past Officer of the Students' Union, they will show you the Alphabet, Emotions and tips on how to communicate with a deaf person.
