national student survey results
The Students’ Union has scored 70% for overall student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2016.

Unfortunately the Union has seen a drop of two percentage points from 2015, however many unions seem to have suffered from lower scores and we are still 4th out of our Million+ grouping – made up of universities of a similar background and student composition. This means we still managed to out-perform unions like Anglia Ruskin, Bath Spa and the University of Sunderland to name a few.

The NSS, which surveys final year students across the country, also recorded a score of 85% satisfaction for the University, which is a two-point increase on 2015. This score put Staffs 7th out of the 16 Million+ universities, with Edinburgh Napier University highest at 96%.

The Union will be spending the summer analysing the data and breaking it down further to understand it.

On a faculty level we can already see that the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies had the highest union satisfaction with 73% and the Faculty of Health Sciences was the lowest with 62%.

The Faculty of Business, Education and Law had the highest overall satisfaction with the university at 87% and the Faculty of Health Sciences scored the lowest with 82%.

Creative Writing, Radio Production, Film Television and Radio studies, VFX and graphic design all gave the union a score over 90%! We are glad to hear that you are all so happy with the union. For those who didn’t rate us so highly, feel free to get in touch and offer suggestions as to how we can improve.

The University had 12 courses that recorded 100% satisfaction, which is great. However BA (Hons) VFX and Concept Design scored 33%, BSc (Hons) Games Concept Design scored 52%, BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology scored 53% and BSc (Hons) Nursing Practice Children scored 56% as the institution’s lowest scoring courses. The officer team will be discussing these courses with their Faculty deans over the next few weeks to understand where improvements can be made.

The data from the NSS will now be combined with data from other sources, including the Student Viewfinder Survey that mirrors the NSS for other undergraduate students not eligible for the NSS. The officer team will then work with the data to produce a plan on what the Union will focus its resources on for the year to come. This plan will then be presented to the University and students to hopefully introduce changes that will make your time better at University.

We hope to offer more comprehensive updates later in the summer. In the meantime, if you have any specific NSS questions, please email union@staffs.ac.uk.
