The top things to take away from the #BetterStaffs!
Student recommended ideas on how to make a #BetterStaffs were submitted online to our #BigIdeas page and we brought them up at the #BetterStaffs and this is how it went…
We asked your opinion and these are the 6 main points you brought to our attention, so we took these to a #BetterStaffs which is a student focus group of types. In these days, students discuss the issues and suggestions and get student feedback on how we could go about fixing them.
We then do our best to come up with a solution…
Improved Laundry Services was the highest vote issue on the post, so we started there,
ISSUES RAISED:
- Pricing
- Accessibility (such as for students in wheelchairs)
- Quality
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- Including washing into the bills for halls (current rates being £80-£130pw)
- Washing to be free as they’re powered by solar panels
- Dryers that are currently exclusively on the top to be mixed into the washers on the bottom for accessibility
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
-
There is a meeting next week between circuit (The Laundry provider) and the Estates so all info brought forward before then will be brought up in the meeting
-
‘We are waiting to hear back from the audit on the accessibility of all the campus’ and venues etc including the laundry rooms.’
ISSUES RAISED:
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- A society or forum led by another student who is fluent in another language
- An online module
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
- A society or forum would be a possibility but we cannot make someone start a society, so it would have to be a student organisation.
- ‘Train the trainer courses through the union – someone who is fluent in another language could be trained to teach other students.’ – Steph
ISSUES RAISED:
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- More variety and differentiation between Ember and Verve
- Make Verve more of a Cocktail Bar and Ember more of a Pub
- Signage for the accessibility bar
- Fresher food options (Such as a salad bar)
- More advertising for takeaway options (potential for an app)
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
- Steph had the idea of a salad bar in her Manifesto but ‘it didn’t happen because of wastage, it is important to not have waste so it wouldn’t be viable expences wise.’
- We could do a smaller menu with fresher options on but that would mean less variety.
- There is a focus group on the 14th March to gain opinions from student staff/students who eat and the venues as well as students who don’t eat at the venues.
ISSUES RAISED:
- There should be the occasional themed night (such as the best of British) that is dedicated to RnB, Hip-hop music themes
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- ‘Potential for each hour to change to a different theme / generation of music.’
- ‘It would be nice to have some differentiation from the same songs playing every week. It gets a bit too predictable.’
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
- There’s the separate DJ in Verve during Gobbles and Flashback Friday’s that is dedicated to RnB and Hip-Hop
- The idea for the themed night dedicated is a good possibility and it will be brought up during meetings with LRV & Verve and make plans for themed nights.
ISSUES RAISED:
- Dual-screens in Labs in Mellor
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- Access to the dual-screen labs in Cadman 24/7
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
- Dual-screens have been ordered for the labs in Mellor, its now just a matter of installing them.
- There is a form with estates in the Cadman building to gain access to the Dual-screens in the labs there.
ISSUES RAISED:
- The Uni-card machines not working fully in Verve
STUDENT SUGGESTIONS:
- Making sure that the venues are consistent in the options for payments
OFFICER SOLUTIONS:
- Ken the CEO of the Union is working with the Digital Services to sort this issue out. We don’t have a timeline of this at the moment but will hopefully be sorted soon.
