Lobby the University to implement 24/7 mental health support

    Passed
During the COVID-19 pandemic, students and young people have seen one of the worst declines in mental health. The isolation and loneliness that this causes needs to be addressed amongst our student base, especially with freshers returning from the Christmas break. At the start of the year the university hired a Reslife staff member to cover four nights a week, with plans to bring on another to cover the other three. This staff member has since left, and either positions have yet to be filled, leaving us in the same situation we started with. Mental health support and first aid is vital, and with the implementation of new Wellbeing Officers in our clubs and societies, we need to be equipping them with the best possible services to signpost our students to. I believe it would be in the best interests of the student body to immediately provide this 24/7 support, by making filling those positions a higher priority and providing temporary 24/7 support in the meantime while those positions are filled.

1:13pm on 22 Mar 21 Hiya Jamie - The university currently advertises multiple services that offer 24/7 support. The officers will continue to push the priority of Mental Health to the university, and make sure that students are brought into conversations with the university and its new strategy. With the new reform to the Wellbeing and student services, we hope to see great changes for our students here at Staffs. The university now also has a new staff member (community support and wellbeing officer) working nights within reslife, aiming to support students in on-site accommodation – looking after their wellbeing and being a point of contact for students through abnormal hours. Kind regards, Connor President of Staffordshire University students’ Union
