And the impacts are in...
And the results are in...
On November 21, 27 students and 9 staff volunteers set out to see how low the University could get its base load of electricity usage over a 24 hour period.
The majority of the College Road buildings and the Science Centre, Ashley, Law, Trent and Brindley buildings where audited for non-essential equipment being left on. This included items like pcs, fans, chargers, portable electric heaters and so on.
The savings over the weekend were considerable:
-
423 pcs were shut down completely (although many of these were in a low power standby mode).
-
157 lights were switched off.
-
74 printers,
-
18 projectors
-
7 air conditioning systems were also turned off.
These collective actions reduced the weekend baseload (18:00 Friday to 06:00 Monday) by 4.18% and saved 1.1 tonnes of CO2.
If reproduced over a year, the financial savings would be £13k and the carbon saving 57 tonnes.
As part of the
SustainStaffs programme to take a positive lead on the environment, students and staff are encouraged to continue to:
-
switch everything off at the end of the day
-
unplug your chargers from the wall
-
don’t leave equipment on stand-by
-
close windows to keep the heat in and
-
encourage others to do the same.
