Below is the statement issued by Vice Chancellor Michael Gunn on the death of a Staffordshire University student. Any students affected by this incident are encouraged to speak to the Student Enabling Centre

Dear Student

It is with great sadness that I confirm the death of a Staffordshire University student Eni Mevish following an incident in Shelton on Sunday evening. Another of our students sustained injuries in the same incident but has now been released from hospital and is being looked after by family.

Students on our Stoke campus will have received an email detailing the support available to anyone who is upset or concerned by what has happened and our on-campus police officer PC Simon Stone will be out and about on campus to reassure people about their personal safety.

We are informed by police that this is an isolated incident and that following the arrest and charge of a man, they are not looking for anyone else in connection with their inquiries.

That said, this is a shocking event which has a deep impact on our close-knit community of students and staff. I feel desperately sad for Eni, her family and friends and for the injured student and his family and friends. I urge anyone who is struggling to come to terms with this incident to seek the support which is on offer.

The heartfelt condolences of everyone at Staffordshire University go out to the family and friends of Eni. We will ensure we look after them as much as we can. We will now be stepping up our efforts to ensure that all our students feel secure and safe.

Michael
