End of term celebrations at The Union have included the Student Activities Awards, the Student Experience Awards and the big one; the Proud to be Staffs Awards.

The Student Activities Awards evening took place in April, with a variety of awards presented to members of our sports teams and societies.

The Student Activities Awards are “effectively a celebration event for students, we have over 100 clubs and societies which have around 2500 members and it recognises everyone’s determination” says Activities Coordinator Lindsay Tate.

The “Club of the Year” award was given to American Football, the club that has given the best service to its members and has worked hard to promote and develop sport at Staffordshire University.

The “Society of the Year” was presented to media group Staffs TV, who were deemed the most lively and successful society throughout the year.

On to the Student Experience Awards, Student Voice Coordinator Lyn Devine said; “it was a really good opportunity for students, there are an awful lot of things on campus that celebrate the success of students and this is the one event we hold that allows students to give recognition back to the lecturers”.

The “Lecturer I’d get Out of Bed For” award is dedicated to lecturers who motivate and excite students. The winner of this category, Viv Lloyd (award leader of PGCE Primary) had a strong passion for both teaching students and the subject itself. Lyn said “120 of 300 nominations received were going to the “Lecturer I’d Get out Of Bed For” award, it was difficult to choose the top three nominees never mind the winner… her dedication has motivated and encouraged students”.

The Academic Rep Awards presented by Lyn were awarded to those who not only supported the student voice through meetings, but also during lectures and from home in their own time. The “Academic Rep of the Year” award was presented to Kerry Magee, “(Kerry) has not only shown great dedication to student feedback but has gone above and beyond to ensure that the students on her course feel that their voices are heard” Lynn states.

The Proud to be Staffs Awards acknowledges the staff and students who continuously provide a positive experience for students. The “Core Staff Member of the year” award winner was Katie Ferneyhough, Greenpad Coordinator. For “Student Staff Member of the year” awards were given to Precious Innes and Dan Crozier. All three have worked exceptionally hard to maintain and deliver the Students’ Union’s values.

Also at the Proud to be Staffs Awards, Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator Scott Allcock presented the “Volunteer of the Year” award to Zoe Taylor. Scott explained that she has “given herself to the causes that matter to her, volunteering with many causes throughout her time at University including the PDSA, the Commonwealth Games, Disabled Student Peer Mentors, and as an Academic Representative”.
