Firstly, what is the NUS?

The National Union of Students (NUS) is a confederation of UK students’ unions that fights for student issues and a better future for higher education. They represent students at a national level, making student involvement key to ensuring our voices are heard. One way you can be a part of creating exciting change is through becoming an NUS conference delegate!

They previously are the reason students don't pay council tax and why there is a 16-25 Railcard available to students.

What do NUS conference delegates do?

We elect three NUS Delegates to represent Staffs Union at the NUS Conference. NUS National Conference is the head policy-making body of NUS UK. Delegates are elected from each Students’ Union that is an affiliated member of NUS to represent students’ views on a national level. It sets policy for the year ahead and helps elect the President of the NUS and Vice President of Higher Educatrion.

Conference delegates represent our Students’ Union at the conference. Delegates can vote on our behalf and take part in discussions. The three main purposes of the conferences are to:

  1. Scrutinise the current work of the NUS and their elected officers
  2. Set the direction of the NUS (i.e. through campaigns and policy)
  3. Elect future leaders of the NUS.

How much commitment does the role require?

The time commitment required is the duration of the conference (including time for travelling to and from the location unless it is taking place online) as well as a briefing prior to the conference and debriefing after.
