In this Proud to Shout About It, we explore Mario Kart's new Trading Card Game, Slipstream!
Proud to Shout About is a platform for students to celebrate their successes in being part of the union. Whether it’s running societies or simply moments that make you proud, this is the space to share them. It’s all about highlighting the effort, dedication, and passion that students put into their university life and giving them the recognition they deserve.
The Mario Kart Society has been busy at work this year, and alongside some of their other projects, of recent note, is the release of their own trading card game called Slipstream:
"(We) made it as a love letter to our members and a tribute to our shared passion for racing. It had been almost a year in the making, going through constant beta testing, rebalancing, redesigning, ideas and critiquing before the final product was finally made available."
The card game not only is a novel concept for a society:
"It contains fully original art, drivers (based off members with their permission). items and more! It's constantly being expanded as more of our tournament winners get their own champion card, and more ideas come to light."
The launch of this card game was also a clear success:
"In just one week, we sold twenty six card packs, a number which has ballooned to around one-hundred and thirty at the time of writing."
The proceeds of the card sales goes to Mario Kart’s chosen charity, Mind, whose aim is to raise awareness and engage in action surrounding mental health issues in the UK. As a result of Slipstream, they have raised £130 as of the 20th May.
"Since launch, this TCG has truly helped to bring MKS even closer together, from game matches to trading during sessions, hunting for the rarest cards and learning how best to deckbuild as the game continues to evolve. Its become one of our most popular and well-received merch pieces, and we fully intend to continue with it onto the next year."
