Midwifery Society bringing a wave of light and grief support.
Proud to Shout About is a platform for students to celebrate their successes in being part of the union. Whether it’s running societies or simply moments that make you proud, this is the space to share them. It’s all about highlighting the effort, dedication, and passion that students put into their university life and giving them the recognition they deserve.
From 9–15 October, the Midwifery Society recognised Baby Loss Awareness Week, a dedicated time to commemorate and honour babies who have sadly passed away during pregnancy or shortly after birth, while raising awareness of the support available to bereaved parents, families and loved ones.
As future midwives, the society recognises the importance of compassionate, sensitive and person-centred care for families experiencing baby loss. Baby Loss Awareness Week provided an opportunity to raise awareness, encourage open conversations and highlight the importance of ensuring that bereaved families feel heard, understood and supported during such a difficult time.
As part of the week, the Midwifery Society hosted a Baby Loss Awareness Stall, creating a dedicated space for remembrance, reflection and support. The display featured handmade ribbons that individuals could dedicate to babies lost too soon, providing a meaningful way to honour their memories and recognise the lasting impact they have on their families and loved ones.

On 15 October, the final day of Baby Loss Awareness Week, the society supported the annual Wave of Light. Tea lights were provided to give individuals the opportunity to light a candle at 7 pm, joining people across the world in remembering babies who are no longer with us. This shared moment offered an opportunity to reflect, remember and show solidarity with families affected by baby loss.
The society also provided Sands bereavement support leaflets at the stall, signposting individuals towards specialist resources and support services. By making this information accessible, the Midwifery Society aimed to highlight the importance of ensuring that families have access to appropriate guidance and compassionate support when navigating grief.

The Midwifery Society would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone who visited the stall, engaged with the display and shared their personal stories. The society greatly appreciates the trust shown by those who chose to share their experiences and recognises the courage it can take to speak about the loss of a much-loved baby.
Through initiatives such as this, the Midwifery Society is proud to raise awareness of baby loss, promote compassionate bereavement care and encourage a supportive community where every bereaved family feels heard, valued and understood. By continuing to facilitate meaningful conversations and highlight the importance of sensitive communication, the society hopes to contribute to greater understanding of baby loss and the vital role of empathy in midwifery practice.
🩷 Remembering every baby, supporting every family, and keeping their memories alive.
