A former Staffs student has combined his professional nursing experience, personal mental health journey, and lifelong passion for rock and metal music to publish a unique new book.
James Neeson, who studied at Staffs between 2007 and 2010, has recently released Mental Health for Metalheads: Rock Your Way to Wellbeing, a self-help guide aimed specifically at members of the rock and metal community.
Now a registered nurse, James drew on both his clinical knowledge and his own experiences of living with mental illness when writing the book. The result is a practical, accessible guide that explores mental health, wellbeing, therapy techniques, and resilience through the lens of heavy music culture.
Rather than taking a traditional self-help approach, the book is packed with references familiar to rock and metal fans, making complex topics such as neuroscience, psychology and mental wellbeing more relatable and engaging.
Speaking about the project, James explained that he wanted to bridge the gap between conventional self-help literature and a community that often feels overlooked by mainstream wellbeing resources.
"I'm a registered nurse with a history of mental illness myself and a lifelong lover of rock and metal music. The book translates the 'greatest hits' of self-help, philosophy, neuroscience and therapy techniques into a metal and rock-themed package filled with validation, hope, humour and plenty of music references."
The book has received support from several well-known figures within the mental health and rock communities. Psychologist and author Dr Scott Eilers wrote the foreword, with contributions from Dr Kate Quinn, founder of Heavy Metal Therapy, and Leif Munkelien, founder of Metalheads Against Bullying.
Adding to its credentials, a licensed psychiatrist fact-checked the publication, while legendary thrash metal artist Ed Repka hand-painted the cover artwork, whose iconic work is recognised by metal fans worldwide.
James has also chosen to use the book to support a cause close to the alternative music community, donating 50% of his author profits to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, an organisation that campaigns against prejudice, hatred and intolerance.
Since its release, Mental Health for Metalheads has gained attention from a range of music and culture publications, including Kerrang!, Blabbermouth and Record Collector Magazine.
The book is now available in hardback, paperback, and Kindle formats, with copies also stocked by a number of independent record stores and booksellers in the UK and internationally.
We're always pleased to hear about our graduates' achievements, and it's fantastic to see a Staffordshire alumnus using his professional expertise and personal experiences to make mental health support more accessible to a wider audience.
Congratulations to James on publishing his book, and we wish him every success with its continued release.
