We catch up with Corey, one of the talented Staffs Games students whose game, Gravity Knight, is taking off on Steam!
As your Students' Union, we love to keep up to date with all the amazing things you get up to in your studies, your work, and beyond. So, when we hear about something awesome that's been achieved
by one of you guys, we just have to shout about it!
Corey, one of our fabulous Course Reps, mentioned casually to us that their Collaborative Module team's game had landed on Steam and ended up garnering thousands of downloads with the help of an enthusiastic YouTuber, and we were locked in - we had to know more! Luckily, Corey was more than happy to chat to us about Gravity Knight's backstory, its build, and its fabulous shoot to success.
Check out what Corey had to say below:
"Gravity Knight is a single-player puzzle platformer where you control a little knight who has to complete puzzles in different levels that have different gravity elements. The game was made during the collaborative module at the University of Staffordshire, where we were put into teams of around 20. The game's original idea was to have floating islands where the player would go around and explore (similar to Super Mario Galaxy), but that idea ultimately came to an end as it was way over-scoped. We still wanted to do something gravity-related, and that's how we came up with the Gravity Knight!
We wanted to keep the fantastical nature of the islands but keeping it scoped to a timeframe where it would be complete for the module's end, so we decided on a dungeon (the dungeon aesthetic came to be because of the limitations in art) where a knight is sent to prove his worth to the king by completing puzzles. After university, a couple of us decided to work on it some more and port it over to Steam. This included an overhaul of the core gameplay as well as adding more levels and secret areas (a room full of photos of my cat!)
Surprisingly, we managed to end up on a YouTuber's video (Big Garf, 149K Subscribers), and this seriously boosted the overall unique downloads of the game to over 14k! We don't have any plans for any future additions to the game currently, but we would all love to come back to it someday, either by adding new levels or creating a new game entirely."
