Last week, students played an important role in the recruitment process for our next Vice Chancellor.

As Students’ Union President, I had the opportunity to chair the Student Voice Panel, one of the key panels involved in the recruitment process. Candidates spent time with the panel discussing the University, the student experience, and what students want to see from the person who will lead our University into the future.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Poppy Neville, Tom Clough, and Akira Enoki for giving up two days of their time to take part in the panel.

All three were excellent throughout the process and represented our students with professionalism, confidence, and thoughtfulness. They listened carefully to each candidate, took part in some really interesting conversations, and were not afraid to explore the issues that matter to students.

Having students involved in a decision as important as appointing a new Vice Chancellor really matters. The person appointed will make decisions that shape the future of our University and the experiences of thousands of current and future students. Student voices, therefore, need to be part of that process.

Following each conversation, we came together as a panel to discuss our thoughts and feedback. It was then my responsibility as Chair to bring this together and feed the views of the panel into the wider recruitment process.

I was incredibly proud of the way our students approached this responsibility and the insight they brought to the conversations.

Thank you again to Poppy, Tom, and Akira for giving your time and making sure students had a strong voice in such an important moment for our University.
