Hi Everyone!

You may have seen recent discussions and concerns about Turnitin and how it is used in higher education. We know conversations like these can raise questions for students, especially when it comes to assessments, academic integrity and how your work is treated.

As your elected Students’ Union Officers, your experiences, opinions and the issues which affect you is what we're all about. It’s our job to make sure your voices are heard and that your concerns are taken seriously.

We’ve been speaking with the University to better understand its position on Turnitin and the questions students may have. Here’s what the University has told us:

  • The University does not use Turnitin’s AI detector.
  • The University does not use Turnitin Clarity, a tool associated with monitoring the writing process.
  • The University is keeping alternatives under consideration as the sector responds to ongoing developments.

These are important distinctions in the context of the current discussion. However, we recognise wider questions about AI detection, student privacy and the use of student data remain important to students here at University of Staffordshire and across higher education.

We’ll continue to listen to your concerns and engage with the University where questions arise about the tools and systems that affect your academic experience.
