Your student voice in action
Our first Students’ Representative Council (SRC) meeting of the academic year took place on 23 October, bringing together Subject Reps and elected Officers to discuss what matters to students across the University of Staffordshire.
What is Rep Council?
Rep Council brings student representatives and Officers together to discuss the student experience, review the Union’s work and identify issues that need action. It helps turn what students are saying into conversations with the University and changes that make a difference.
What was discussed?
Representatives raised a range of issues affecting students across subjects and campuses, including:
- Teaching and learning: concerns about practical skills, teaching materials, assessment expectations and access to reliable equipment.
- Communication and support: delays in staff responses, unclear assessment information and difficulties accessing or understanding Student Inclusion Plans (SIPs).
- Student finances: the financial pressures facing international students, including tuition fees, limited bursaries and placement-related costs.
- Staff and supervision: concerns about academic supervision and how student representatives are supported in their roles.
- Getting students heard: ideas for helping Course Reps engage their classmates, gather feedback and build stronger connections across courses.
Reps also reflected on what we can learn how evidence gathered from affected students helped secure a recent ‘win’ for students, demonstrating how student experiences can influence university decisions and lead to practical support. The Council also explored ways to recognise the work of Reps, celebrated examples of positive teaching practice and discussed how the Union can act on feedback from its student voice activities. These conversations will help shape the Union’s follow-up work, with actions assigned to Officers and the Voice Team.
