Sustainable Union: Green Conversations in London

Vice President Sam Pillow travelled to London last week for his quarterly Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board meeting at NUS headquarters. There the group spent the time planning a better involvement with parliament, upcoming sustainability campaigns for national universities to adopt, and a big ask for lecturers.

275 Euston Road, London. The home of NUS HQ. I travelled down here recently for the quarterly Environmental Sustainability Advisory Board meeting. There were a few exciting things talked about:

A meeting is being organised between NUS and Green Party leader Caroline Lucas MP, in an effort to join up our work with parliament, and to get answers to our burning questions - like how is the environment prioritised on the govenment's agenda??!

February saw the launch of the “SDG Teach In”, a campaign where students all over the country are asking their lecturers to teach sustainability  in their course. NUS say the campaign will raise awareness of why the Sustainable Development Goals should be at the heart of further and higher education, and help catalyse the change needed to make this happen. If you haven't heard of the SDG's, take a look at them here:

We are asking lecturers and teaching staff across UK universities and colleges to pledge to include these goals within their teaching, learning, and assessment on their course(s).

Another item we talked about was that it may be good for NUS to work more with pre-16 education and teaching children from as early as primary school about the importance of the environment. Now, not everyone around the table thought that was an appropriate use of resources, but it was still and interesting topic for discussion.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Also, would you like to see more sustainability teaching in your course?
