Spotlight of the Month - Project earth Society

Project Earth Society have really hit the ground running this academic year with a list of plans as long as your arm, ideas and suggestions for greening our campus coming through almost daily and an ever growing network of both on and off campus contacts and partners to help our students and Staffordshire University on the journey towards net zero.

The society, led Shaun Saunders and Ryan Edwards is on a mission to make the world a better place to live.

Project Earth Society Activities and Events

This month, the society is taking the spotlight with a series of exciting activities and events that aim to educate and raise awareness about environmental issues, biodiversity, and sustainability.

The Stoke based society not only attended welcome events at Stoke, but were also happy to travel to Stafford for the welcome events at our Black Heath Lane site too, which helped pave the way for collaboration with our Paramedic Society aiming to create a fun and engaging way to connect with the community while spreading their message of sustainability.

To combat pumpkin waste and raise awareness about environmentally friendly disposal methods, the team have organized presentations and discussions on how to safely and environmentally dispose of pumpkins. Attendees also being encouraged to upcycle cardboard and transform it into zoo animals, giving new life to materials that would otherwise go to waste.

Big plans are also underway for sustainability themed creativity in collaboration with the Engineering Society, from charitable fundraising to reusing waste products in the engineering labs, the aim of events is to to educate and raise awareness of various ways students can reduce waste and emissions, finding new and innovative approaches to help combat climate change which can be incorporated into both students' studies and eveyday lives.

Project Earth Society has reached out to multiple organizations, expanding their networks and raising awareness amongst the community, securing sponsorship pledges and are working hard to bring a range of sustainable suppliers to campus in the future - watch this space!

During November, they are organising a screening of the documentary film "The Story of Stuff." The committee secured licensing permission to screen the documentary that takes a deep look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns, promoting audience discussion and analysis of the connections between numerous environmental and social issues which supports the society member's calls for collective action to create a more sustainable world.

Squeezebox Edible Plant bombing is sure be great fun - all students welcome.

The committee's passion to lead on sustainability doesn't stop there - as Shaun also champions our Hedgehog Friendly Campus Society too, and is looking for fellow committee leaders to help regain Staffordshire University's Hedgehog Friendly Campus accreditation, demostrating that our spikey little friends have a welcoming home at Staffs too!
