You'd be forgiven if your first thought, when you hear the word communist, is that of famine, authoritarianism, and nuclear war. What cannot be forgiven however, are the slanders that have made this characterisation so. At its heart, marxism is a philosophy that entails a global struggle of the working class. A struggle against manufactured poverty, against imperialist occupation, against the dominance of an exceedingly wealthy ruling class, over an exceedingly impoverished working class. It is the struggle of untold millions throughout history who dared to demand freedom, to demand emancipation from bigotry and persecution, to demand a better life for every human being.
This struggle is still fought today. It's fought on the picket lines, from within the trade unions, across the pages of newspapers and out on the streets. But just as importantly, it's fought here. On the university campuses. It is here that you shall be armed with the knowledge, and the experience, to fight back against the worsening consequences of capitalism. Should you choose to take the leap into the heart of class politics, you shall not be doing so alone. It is together that we will stand up for our right to human dignity, and together we will fight as siblings in arms.
