Why can my placement students not claim a Volunteer DBS check?

Staffordshire University Students' Union currently offers an online Volunteer Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checking system to volunteers that we manage. This is part of our organisational commitment to delivering services that promote the safety of our volunteers and service users.

However, we only provide 'Volunteer DBS Checks' as defined by the Home Office. We do not offer DBS checks through our system for non-voluntary personnel.

For the purposes of the Disclosure and Barring Service, the Home Office strictly defines volunteers as applicants who must not:

  • benefit directly from the position for which the DBS application is being submitted;
  • receive any payment (except for travel and other approved out-of-pocket expenses);
  • be on a work placement;
  • be on a course that requires them to do this job role;
  • be in a trainee position that will lead to a full time role/qualification.

As such, we are unable to offer DBS checks to students volunteering as part of a Placement Module or Work Experience Activity. For more information please contact the Students' Union Employability and HR Team.
