Hey Staffs! October is here, and you know what that means — it’s Black History Month! Across the UK, this is a time to celebrate Black culture, heritage, and achievements with 2025 Theme on STANDING FIRM IN POWER AND PRIDE— and right here at University of Staffordshire, our students are sharing what it truly means to them.

This year, your Students' Union took to Instagram to ask YOU a few powerful questions:

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Why is it important or relevant today?

And what does it feel like to be African in today’s world?

The responses were real, heartfelt, and inspiring. From reflections on pride and identity to stories of resilience and belonging, our campus community reminded us that Black History Month isn’t just a moment — it’s a movement.

Here are some of the amazing words our students shared:

Resilience reflected in our history, spirit, and strength of hope, being diverse due to loads of languages, traditions, tribes, food, creativity, being powerful in our mindset, excellence, greatness, and most importantly the colour of our skin.”

“Celebrated to highlight achievements that have been long overlooked, teaches about our past, shapes our present, and helps inspire greater achievement in the future. Not only to remember history but to educate and motivate Black people to understand that they can achieve whatever they determine to achieve and compete at any height they deem to, hence combating racism and contributing to inclusion. It is meant to celebrate the highlights of the importance of things that have been often ignored or left out in the mainstream of education such as slavery, the struggle that Black people have gone through in the past, but also underlines and learns of the things Black people have had to fight for and the impact they have had on society to shape the world as it is now.” “An opportunity to celebrate Black people who have done great things and also tell their stories. A time to celebrate the greatness of Black people as well as their struggles, and that Black history is part of world history. BHM started in October 1987 in the UK and it was a celebration of the 150th anniversary for the abolishment of slavery, celebrated till this day to remember our roots.

Black History Month gives us all the chance to learn, unlearn, and celebrate together. Whether it’s through music, art, food, or storytelling — it’s a time to amplify voices and embrace the beauty of diversity across our campus.

So, take a scroll through our Instagram page (@Staffsofficers) to hear directly from our students and join in the celebration! Let’s keep the conversation going — because Black history is world history, and it deserves the spotlight all year round.
