Last week, some of our students took part in a canal side clear up, hosted by Melinda Clarke. Although the event was quieter than expected, the positive impact was still very clear.
"During the event 2 ½ kilometers of the canal side waterway was covered and 20+ cans were picked up, along with endless various bits and bobs. There was both Canadian geese and mallard ducks quacking around in the canal, while several passer-by’s congratulated the clean-up efforts with smiles".

"As I was walking home after the event, I spotted a moorhen strutting joyfully along the canal bank — and in that quiet moment, everything came full circle. It was seeing a moorhen surrounded by litter weeks ago that inspired me to organise this clean-up, and now, witnessing it move freely in a cleaner space felt both meaningful and rewarding. It’s really lovely to make a small difference in the community."
Melinda is still very keen to host more clean up activities within the area before they graduate, so if you want to get involved, feel free to email us at studentengagement@staffs.ac.uk, and we'll be more than happy to help you organise these.
