Proud to Shout About It is a platform for students to celebrate their successes in being part of the Union. Whether it’s running societies or simply moments that make you proud, this is the space to share them. It’s all about highlighting the effort, dedication, and passion that students put into their university life and giving them the recognition they deserve.

Before the Christmas Break, the Computing Society (SCS) delivered a mentorship scheme, matching 16 students with industry professionals working in their chosen fields at major companies, enabling students to gain a valuable insight into both the industry and academics. Owing to this success, they are re-running the scheme this year!

"We have already matched five student applicants with industry professionals and based on participant feedback, have further personalised the program. Enhancements include facilitated introductory meet-ups, structured goal-setting and ongoing support throughout the scheme. In several cases, mentors and mentees chose to continue working together beyond the formal end of the program, forming long-term professional connections."

How does the mentorship scheme work?

"Student mentees meet weekly with their mentors to work towards clearly defined goals, spanning academic development, portfolio building and career progression. Previous cohorts reported consistently strong outcomes and we are already seeing early impact this year. Students are progressing new projects, completing application-ready CVs and developing both personalised certification and learning pathways."

What companies are involved in the scheme?

"This year’s mentors include professionals from G-Research, bet365, Barclays, freelancing and others, covering disciplines including games programming, narrative design, cybersecurity and networks. The scheme is designed to give students a meaningful advantage as they prepare for careers in industry."

"If you are an applicant, keep an eye out on your email for updates and hopefully a matchup call! Interested, do keep an eye out on our Discord for more info. This opportunity is rare and we are proud to support our members in their development to bridge the gap between academia and industry."
