In this Proud To Shout About It, the Computing Society talk about their recent volunteering and teaching experiences at a University partnered school.
Proud to Shout About is a platform for students to celebrate their successes in being part of the union. Whether it’s running societies or simply moments that make you proud, this is the space to share them. It’s all about highlighting the effort, dedication, and passion that students put into their university life and giving them the recognition they deserve.
Throughout the end of 2025 and into 2026, the Computing Society has been visiting a school that has been associated with the University as early as November, visiting them over the span of 8 sessions, with 4 more sessions, and a recent campus visit to end their time with the society! This concluded to a total of 6 unique sessions spread across multiple classes.

Committee and member volunteers (shoutout to Aura, Hannah, James, Maryum, Jaime, Jonathan, Canan, Yogitha, Rafin, Ogooluwa and Masedo) have been able to support 2 classes with their learning to encourage them into tech fields and to think creatively, including a SEN class!
The taught sessions were as follows:
- Cryptography: history of ciphers, encryption, hashing, spying and hands-on code cracking.
- Games Programming and Hardware: Explanations on embedded systems, computing history, microcontrollers, digital pets and an activity to program your own digital pets on Micro:bits!
- Digital Safety: how to stay safe online, cookies, cyber-bullying, social media policies and scams.
- Networking Media and Topologies: Covering the role of routers, switches and edge devices. The activity also covered identifying cable types, topology advantages and disadvantages and a fun tour of their school infrastructure.
- Robotic Arms: Learning to program and use industry standard robotic arms using the right PPE.
- Networking Simulations: Configuring routers + PCs and securing their connections using Packet Tracer. This also included a tour of the cab room equipment!
All topped off with fun activities about University experiences and a campus tour!
