We're pleased to share examples of the wonderful people and groups in our community and how they make our student members feel proud. Each group or individual that receives a recognition submission is in with a chance of winning a We Are Staffs Award!

Student led event | bet365 Hackathon
Some proud students told us...
"This event brought in 6 professionals from bet365, a local company that actively supports and hires students from our society through our mentorship scheme. These professionals included the recruiters, senior software developers and backend engineers who throughout the event went around and supported students in tasks.
The event totalled over 40 students, 12+ whole pizzas devoured, 13 teams to solve a challenge in a timed environment of 5 hours. The challenge consisted of learning how to get back full sentences from an API designed to chaos sheer chaos. No single method was the right answer with students experimenting with brute forcing, AI and some optimising programmed solutions… Some students decided to farm chaos and purposely throw off other students! By the end of it they all had certificates to showcase on socials (some £50 vouchers) and portfolio ready pieces they could post on github and documentation."
This event was inclusive to all skill levels, with students joining just for the learning opportunity and still being able to complete it! We’ve had students post their certificates, get in touch with the recruiters again about job opportunities and explore things they’d never covered in their courses.
I never touched APIs before this and now I know how integral they are and how they work. While this event didn't have 100+ attendees, it worked to teach, upskill, recruit, devour, code and support all in one fun event while working with local companies."

"Some points I can think of are: leaders in local company, free pizza and drinks, 5 hours of coding fun, exploring new tech stacks, collaboration between students working in teams, networking and recruiting opportunities!, certificates after which we all shared on socials and portfolio, many students came and attended, cool article made about it - we're famous now!!"
"I liked the free pizza and drinks, it was fun to hang out with friends and classmates. We had recruiters from bet365 come in too who I could have a chat to. This was a great event of the year and I think it should win."
