It's time to reveal January's Student Group of the Month! But before we reveal who our top choice was, we wanted to remind you all that you can tell us about all of the cool things your group have been doing this year by filling out a Proud to Shout About It submission.
Student Group of the Month for January 2026 is...
Game Devleopment Society!
Last month, the Game Development Society hosted its annual Global Games Jam, a two-day event where groups create a playable game. This doesn’t have to be a PC game, and can be an analogue game for anyone wanting to create a board game. This year, the theme jammers were working towards was “MASK”, which featured games focused on murder mysteries (Fantaseer) to post-apocalyptic survival (Mask Up), and even delved into childhood nightmares (Coping Mechanisms).

The groups worked hard to make sure that everything was in place for this year's jammers, setting up rooms, organising volunteers throughout the whole 48 hours event and promoting this year's GGJ on a tight deadline. And from what we’ve heard, the event was a huge success with loads of exciting games available to check out and download.

Huge Congratulations to Game Development Society for winning Student Group of the Month for January!
We also have some groups who didn't quite take the top spot, but were definitely deserving of being mentioned in this month's article.
RAMS X Creative Writing
Last month also saw a hugely popular event hosted by RAMS and Creative Writing Society, who hosted a "deadly" collaborative evening event - a roleplaying murder mystery game themed around a rock concert! Jaime and Lizzy, taking the role of duo rock band "Lez-Lizzard", wore haunting electrocution-themed makeup as participants worked together to find the two killers who had "murdered" them in cold blood. Each student held a character card that not only provided a short bio to roleplay from, but a role known only to them that could change the direction of the game! The event was a highly sociable one, with students embracing the brief character information they were given and turning idle sections of the game into character-based dramas with fully fledged backstories and dynamics.

If you want to read more about what the group got up to at their event, feel free to check out their Proud To Shout About It Article!
Oriental Society
Oriental Society also stood out last month, hosting a bake sale for a relief charity, focusing on education, restoring land that had been affected by deforestation, and supporting climate-affected communities.
The group raised a whopping £135 for the charity by selling cakes and sweet treats outside of the Ember Lounge.
Again, a huge congratulations to GDS and all of the groups mentioned above! And if you think your group has done something that you want to share with us, feel free to submit a Proud to Shout about it submission, or fill out a Spotlight Article form if you want to get your group out there.
