Emission Impossible

Since September, 22 different Student Groups and Societies have hired a vehichle for their social or trip - whether that's Staffs TV, the Theme Park Society, Snowsports or Ultimate Frisbee - our students are going places, literally.

Having clocked up over 2800 miles, we thought it might be best do something about all the carbon emissions this will have produced. In April, working with Enterprise, the Union chose to offset the emissions as part of the Enterprise Carbon Offset program, which aims to offset 42,000 tonnes of carbon. You can find out more about the work Enterprise do at the hyperlink!

Here are some top tips for eco driving, from with a guide from the AA.

  •   Fill yer' boot! - Bums on seats means fewer cars on the road. Try to take a full car instead of two half full ones.
  •
  •   Watch your weight - Make sure you're not carrying anything unnecessary as extra weight increases fuel  costs.
  •
  •  To the limits - Going faster uses more fuel. Drive at 70mph and you'll use up to 9% more than at 60mph and up to 15% more than 50mph. Taking it up 80mph can use up to 25% more fuel than at 70.

The Top Gear team, ready to go.Whilst we're talking about eco-travel options, have you seen Staffs TV does Top Gear? They raced from Stoke to the centre of excellence at Blackheath Lane. In a green twist - we use a plug in hybrid Toyota Prius, kindly sponsored by our local Enterprise branch. Good work guys, and thanks to the team at Enterprise!
