This week, we’re shouting about the revival of the Creative Writing Society, a student-led comeback that has already built a thriving creative community across campus.
Proud to Shout About is a platform for students to celebrate their successes in being part of the union. Whether it’s running societies or simply moments that make you proud, this is the space to share them. It’s all about highlighting the effort, dedication, and passion that students put into their university life and giving them the recognition they deserve.
Creative Writing Manager Jamie reflected on how the society was brought back to life after it ended last year — and how rebuilding from scratch became one of the most rewarding projects of the year.
“Hello! I'm Creative Writing Manager Jaime and I want to take some time to reflect on the Creative Writing Society this year! After the society died last year, I recruited my committee (Evie and Lowenna) with the goal of restarting the society again!
We had to start completely from scratch, including a new logo, Discord server, social medias and no idea what people expected. We reached out to people who were in the society last year, future people who had expressed interest and boom, we had the society up and ready for September!
We attended every event we could go to, advertising with a Media Board , which encouraged people to write down their favourite media to show that Creative Writing wasnot just for book writers , but for people into movies, poems, games and more!
So far, we have run multiple events, Monthly Competitions (with prizes!!!) to encourage fast ideation and friendly competition, Secret Shakespear, Twine Workshops where we explored different writing mediums, and collaborations like with Folklore Society!
We have nearly doubled the expected membership (which was 20, and we are on 38!!!!) and created a new community which people look forward to every week.
We are now a part of the Hive and participate in the infamous Travern Night!! We also provide refreshments, so if you want to come chill, that's okay too! We aim to ensure people get time to work on personal projects too and destroy Writer's Block!!
In the coming weeks, we have a huge amount of things planned, from committee-run workshops, collaborations with other societies and fun activities! If any of it interests you, please feel free to come along!”

Some of the society’s members also wanted to share why the revival has meant so much to them:
“I found a sense of community with the Creative Writing Society. They always uplifted my writing, encouraged me to explore different styles and support you when you need it. Their collaborations and tight-knit group are a blast to be part of.”

“Creative Writing Soc is the first soc to catch my attention when I was planning out my free time, and I am so glad that it did. We always have a good time at soc sessions, and often times joking about our favourite things makes my week. The writing challenge in October was particularly fun, because I so rarely get the time and motivation to do something truly original and spontaneous. This soc fosters that kind of creativity for all things, big and small.”
—Kai
“Creative Writing is one of the few societies I attend weekly, and it's so fun showing up. The environment is really wholesome and the committee are great at making everyone feel included, so excited to see how the society grows now it's been revived.”
— Finn
“The Creative Writing Society is a great place to casually work on your own projects or take part in enjoyable challenges held every couple weeks. The committee are very hands on and supportive with a big goal of theirs being to reduce the feeling of ‘Writer’s Block’. All in all, a great time with great people.”
