This week, we're shining our Student Group Spotlight on Cosplay & Crafts Society...

About the group:

Welcome to the Cosplay & Crafts Society! We are a group focused on teaching you the ins and outs of cosplay, crafting and conventions, three things that all go hand-in-hand.

At our sessions, you'll learn the different areas of what goes into making and maintaining costumes and even get a hands-on try at making things yourself. We cover all sorts of topics, from wig-styling, to application of contact lenses, to foam prop making and much much more!

On top of this, we also do fun special events such as pub quiz nights, movie nights and PowerPoint competitions! We strive to provide a friendly and welcoming social environment where we not just learn about cosplay but also chat, make friends, pop out a board game or two and even play some casual video games -- social games like Among Us and Jackbox, Nintendo, fighting games and more!

Special Achievements to include:

Last year, over 50 members between collaborating societies involved were treated to a trip to the UK's biggest pop culture and gaming event -- MCM London Comic Con/EGX!

This event returns this year on October 25th with a bang for its latest annual iteration! Members for previous collaborating societies (Cosplay & Games Dev) were greeted with a fun-filled day of playing the latest games, networking with like-minded cosplayers, fans and game creators, buying merchandise & shopping for gems from indie and fan artists at Artist Alley and the Dealer Hall, as well as meeting celebrities and online creators at panels and signings!

There's also lots of opportunities to create memories out of your experience by taking many photos of you, cosplayers, your friends and the people you meet -- as well as the opportunity to strengthen your photography or games development portfolio if you're interested in that!

There's something for everyone at MCM, whether you're a cosplayer, an individual wrapped in fandoms, an aspiring games developer/creator/photographer or just looking to make friends, you won't want to miss this! All this and much more are to be expected at this year's event, and now that student finance is approaching -- why not grab yourself a grand day out or an opportunity to network and expand your connections?

Quotes from Members:

"Cosplay was one of the first groups I joined as a fresher, and I was welcomed in with kindness and it helped me throughout my journey through university, I have made close friends with the members and committee as well as coming out of my shell during sessions. This group means a lot to me because of how kind and accommodating everyone is and allowing me to be myself :) The MCM trip was planned out extremely well with an entire session on con safety and what not to do during comic cons to make it an enjoyable experience for all." - Holly B.

"The MCM trip is great because you're going with a bunch of great people you already know from the society, it's like a fun day out with friends where you all get to be in silly costumes and check out awesome con events!" - Holly D.

"To review the cosplay society, I want to start by highlighting how welcoming and friendly the committee is to newcomers. When I first attended a session, I felt anxious walking into a room full of strangers who shared a similar interest. However, the society creates a safe and inclusive environment that makes everyone feel welcomed and valued, which helps ease those initial nerves. Over time, I’ve been able to form great friendships through this group. Each session is tailored to showcase the strengths of the committee members, for example practical crafts, theory e.g. applying contact lenses, and entertaining, funny sessions. Overall, this is my favourite society due to the amount of fun I’ve had and the lifelong friendships I’ve formed as a result. I would highly recommend giving it a try!" - Lewis A.
