Hockey Club (Mens)

In what turned out to be one of the most successful seasons Staffordshire Mens Hockey has ever experienced, the future is continuing to look bright as the club grows year after year and it's your turn to get involved!

In what was to be an incredible season for the club for  both the Mens First  and Second XI's who both managed to win their respective league titles. These titles not only gave the club the recognition it deserves but also meant a  double promotion and the excitement of a more difficult challenge to come. The First X1 were especially impressive throughout the campaign, (managed by the legend Mark Risley in his final year) and proved this by being able to go the entire league season without recording a single loss. This was a very sweet and well deserved end result for the club having come so close to claiming the title the previous season losing narrowly in the last game of the season to prevent the much coveted promotion.

The Second XI's success was prehaps more impressive than that of the First XI's as, under the captaincy of George Sawyer, they succeeded in gaining promotion in only the second year since the orginal incarnation of the team. George's continuing captaincy of the team strives to only strenghten the development of them as they aim to rettain their promoted status despite the loss of some key names.

We Aren't Just About Hockey!!

Yes we may well be a Hockey club but part of the attraction of the club is the social aspects that come with it. Gamedays are on a Wednesday, with regular socials (usually every week) taking place either on a Wednesday night before GOBBLE or on a Monday before a night out in Hanley. We are an extremely social group and you are always likely to find one, if not all of us out, about and usually making fools of ourselves. With our events off the field making us a close knit bunch, we grow even closer with our actions on it. Hockey may not be your sport but if you want to come along, give it a go and get drunk with one the most active social groups on campus, you're more than welcome to join us!!

Without doubt, the most important event of the season is the annual Varsity game against Keele University, our local and not so friendly rivals. This is the "Big One". Having lost the previous year, the 2012/13 campaign was our attempt at revenge. Alas it was not to be and despite holding a 2-0 lead with less than ten minutes to go, Keele managed a late, late equaliser to take the game to extra time. Despite taking the lead once again, leading 3-2 with no time left of the clock, Keele managed to find another late equaliser meaning the game, having ended 3-3, would be decided on the dreaded Penalty Flicks. Despite spending months practising in anticipation of just such a reality it was not our year and in one of the most heart-wrenching moments ever experienced, the boys were gutted to lose. However this does mean that the 2013/14 we will be training twice as hard, we will be twice as fit and this time WE WILL BE VICTORIOUS!!

That's Not All!!

BUT, this is not all that Mens Hockey have to offer you. We have the annual tour to the Bournemouth Hockey Festival for a weekend of fun, sun, sea and hockey as well at the potential chance for a secondary tour abroad. This season we were lucky enough to have the chance to spend a couple of days in Prague, a great place to explore, have a laugh and of course a couple of alcoholic beverages.

IF you can possibly stand anymore excitement throughout the year, add to it the traditional and once again annual Old Boys Weekend where previous years players return for a few drinks and a game or two and you have a great year to be part of men's hockey. So at the very, very least just give it a go, what do you have to lose other than your memory from the night before?! It dosen't matter if  your a seasoned club player or trying it out for the first time, you're more than welcome to come and knock some balls around. We will be at both the Stafford and Stoke Campus Freshers fairs as well as hanging around during freshers week, just approach us any one of us friendly bunch for more info.

We look forward to seeing you all in September and hope you can be part of another great season for Staffs Men's Hockey!!!
