Hi! I'm Tom and I'm a first year student paramedic on the BSc course of September 2020. I'm a passionate believer in the treatment and inclusion of sufferers of mental health, and I'm committed to asking the questions that need answers in order to keep student wellbeing to a maximum here at Staffs, and in turn fulfill our academic potentials.

I feel that through my past experience and the knowledge I’ve gained as a previous sufferer of ill mental health, and someone who’s family has been greatly affected by the repercussions, I can make a real difference to the outlook of students and hopefully generate an environment where students feel safe, motivated, and have their voices heard.

I would support all students by being accessible and being a proactive voice for everyone who feels unheard, and by providing a safe, inclusive platform for everyone to participate in generating the most positive environment for the general wellbeing of all students.

If I could change 3 things about being a student here at staffs it would be to:

  • Make mental health resources and information more accessible from day 1 as part of the induction sessions.

  • Include timetabled sessions which are focused on incorporating down time and self care into our daily lives, an idea which is already at the forefront of the course that I am currently studying.

  • Further promote the mentor scheme for new students as I believe having the opportunity to talk to those who’ve been in your position is invaluable and crucial for all students.

I believe the biggest issue currently facing Staffordshire University is being able to maintain social inclusion in a year that has been mostly absent of that. In turn, striving to adapt and be resilient as a University is a huge challenge but one that we have shown we are capable of when committed and dedicated across the board.

The biggest issue I foresee the Students' Union to face in the next 12 months is the challenges presented from the reintroduction of face to face teaching after a year of isolation and online learning. Although this is a welcome return to normality, this will pose a significant challenge to many who are feeling anxious in anticipation and as a consequence will seek the help and guidance of the Students’ Union. It is our duty to provide clarity and information, and take all concerns seriously.

A priority campaign I would run if elected would be the introduction of mental health ambassadors into all departments and campuses who can refer students to relevant resources based on the concerns they have.

I feel this matters to students as our outlook and mindset are greatly affected by our individual mental health, and when this is optimised to be free from any causes of stress or concern it allows us to perform to our best capability within our course, and attain the best results and engagement from our learning. Knowing that this is a top priority for the university will reassure students in knowing that they’re fully supported.

Although I believe that every student has different perspectives and different views to offer, this is an initiative that requires commitment from all staff and students and I believe my dedication to this cause will provide me with the motivation to commit myself fully to making a difference to people’s lives and ensuring the university remain a positive place to study

I'm eager to get started, and determined to get the ball rolling on an exciting project and a whole host of new challenges!
