In my role as conditioning coach this year I have been able to gain an insight into how the committee runs what is involved within the roles. This has allowed me to feel confident in putting myself forward for the role of Communications Officer (Social Sec) for the team. I realise that this role requires organising things such as measuring and ordering kit through to organising social events and liaising with other sports teams and societies.

If I were to be successful in my application for the role, I would aim to work closely with the Club President to ensure timely and effective communication with members of the teams regarding events, practices and other important information. I would look to do this by keeping the social media channels up to date and ensuring that important team information is put into the relevant group chats. In terms of social media I would also like to introduce ways of recognising achievements of athletes, this is something I have seen other cheer teams utilise to boost team morale and sharing achievements.

In terms of social events, I would like to continue Zoe’s work of organising a range of sober socials and nights out with the hope of holding events that appeal to everyone on the team. Some of my current ideas include pottery painting, bowling and meals out alongside themed nights out. This year I would also like to look into the possibility of going on a tour or attending the Bournemouth 7s sport and music event/festival as a cheer team. This would allow everyone to bond as a group and enjoy a new experience. The cost of living crisis has had a large impact on everyone and I also understand that cheer and uni life can be expensive for team members, so I would also like to include free events throughout the year so that no one is made to feel excluded by the financial implications of socials.

Another key responsibility of Social Secretary is to organise and plan the Scarlettes charity work. On a personal note, I spend a large amount of my time supporting and carrying out work for charities including through work for the Rotary Club which I have been doing for the past 10 years. This is something I would like to integrate more into the Scarlettes, whether it be through events that raise awareness for causes close to team members hearts to promoting more of the events that give us the opportunity to raise money to donate to causes.

The final thing I would like to look into in this role would be working with the President and Finance Officer to make contact with local and larger companies to see if we could work towards sponsorships to improve facilities and equipment that we have available. For instance, seeing if we could work towards new mats for training as this would benefit all members. When we attended BCA I noticed that many teams had utilised this in order to support them with reaching the competition.

If I were to be voted in to the role of Social Secretary, I would look forward to making the year ahead fun and entertaining for all members of the team, starting at the welcome fair in September, when we start welcoming new members into our Scarlettes family!
