Candidate for the position of Cheerleading Club - Communications Officer

Megan Walby

Scarlettes Communications Officer Manifesto

Hi! I’m Megan, I’m on the pom team and I’m running for your 23/24 communications officer! If elected I will:

  • Increase our number of socials and the variety of said socials to be more inclusive and bring the entire squad together more often. I feel that this is important as we have so many teams and such a variety of interests that it’s easy for people to feel intimidated. This would include non – alcoholic socials, online quiz/film/game nights via discord/kahoot, days out, themed costume/cooking competitions, collaborations with other societies and finally team building activities within or outside of training time. I feel that this would boost morale thus improving performance.

  • Implement a strong social media brand. I can do this by creating a consistent graphic design style on the Instagram for example using a recurring colour scheme, custom font sets & logos on every post to be more recognisable. As an Illustrator I would be more than happy to be responsible for the graphics creation and I would put in a lot of effort to make art that perfectly represents/advertises our squad. I can also do this by putting our Tiktok page to use, UK University cheer has been making massive waves on TikTok and it can be a great way to connect with other squads, promote/share what we do with people that enjoy cheer and have fun with each other by working together to create content.

  • Increase on-campus advertisements and the utilisation of student union website/social media. Using ideas from the point above I believe we can get more of our campus involved and excited about what we do. Events like the Movember donations at Ember and Bring a Boy to Cheer were immensely successful and I think increasing these union advertised events would not only help us support third parties but also bring more awareness to our sport. Implementing events such as this at the beginning of term would increase attendance to our give it a go session thus growing our family.

To conclude, I love cheer. It changed my life and I love every single member of the family we have. The push that finally gave me the confidence to try cheer was seeing two people in Aldi wearing Scarlettes hoodies (amazing marketing strategy there). I wanted that family connection and I’m very lucky I got it. I would only use my position to share that love with as many people as possible and create the most memorable and fulfilling year for anyone that decides to join us. Thank you for reading. <3
