Proud to be Staffs Story: Oliver Walker & Nathan Riley

Senioir Lecturer and Technical Specialist | School of Digital, Technologies and Arts

"Taking on Staffs TV was never going to be an easy task. The pandemic destroyed the continuity of the society and at the start of the academic year, it was as good as defunct. In a last ditch effort to save the society, Nathan Riley (former Staffs TV station manager & Technical Specialist) & Oliver Walker (Senior Lecturer in Film, Television & Radio) were enlisted to see how they could make Staffs TV relevant and purposeful again. Indeed, Oli and Nathan were enthusiastic about the project and promised to make it work. Oli enlisted his level 5's and 6's to Staffs TV, and created assessed projects which directly related to the running of the society, encouraging student engagement, as well as directly impacting on the student's course. Early projects included promotional materials of St George's Knights, a charity which focusses on wheelchair football, and promoting the opening of the Catalyst building. However, the bigger projects were around the corner. Varsity is a huge event in the Staffordshire University calendar, and Staffs TV had been known in the past to cover the event, but was unable to for the last two years. Organizing a team capable to cover such an event was no mean feat, yet Oli's reassuring presence for both Staffs TV and the Union, alongside Nathan's experience, positivity, and can-do attitude helped make the event a success as well as making Staffs TV a flagship society again. Staffs TV are also covering the leadership race this year, and knowing Oli and Nath are a part of the team reassures us all that again, this will be a huge success. Thank you for breathing new life into the society, it's people like you which make us #proudtobestaffs. Can't wait to see what we can achieve next year!"
