NUS votes for 5th liberation network

The National Union of Students (NUS) has voted to create a fifth liberation network for transgender students.

The liberation networks are permanent groups to represent those areas of society that are considered under-represented. So far there are four networks in place, for women, disabled students, multi-cultural students and LGBT+ students.

At the NUS's Company Law meeting, President Malia Bouattia put forward the proposal to change the liberation network structure and add a fifth network for transgender students. Melantha Chittenden, NUS's LGBT+ Officer also spoke in support of the motion.

A second proposal to add a representative to the block of 15 for students that are parents or have caring responsibilities was also proposed.

Both proposals were passed by the meeting's participants, which included our own vice president Darren Clarke.

Darren said: "This change is fantastic news and it's great to see NUS leading the way with important equality issues such as this."
